-
In the BIOS screen, use the arrow keys to navigate over to the Advanced tab. In the Advanced screen, arrow down to APM configuration and change the restore ac power loss from S5 State to SO State (On older models follow: Bios - advanced - ACPI Settings - restore ac power loss - power on)
-
Advanced - IT8782 super IO config - restore ac power loss by IO - power on
-
On Save and Exit, Hit the down arrow until you reach “Boot Override” list. Select the USB with the image which will be labelled as “UEFI: [usb name here], Partition 1”. Hit enter.
The device will then restart and should automatically boot to the image off the USB drive.

If it prompts you to try and connect to Wireless keep it as “I Don’t want to connect to a wi-fi network right now” then click <Continue>.
-
Leave the updates screen set to Normal Installation and everything else should be either Greyed out or unchecked. If you have the ability to check/uncheck “Download updates while installing VBS”, then you have an internet connection going to the device and you will need to go back and ensure that its unplugged and start from the beginning again. Otherwise just leave it as Normal Installation and click <Continue>.

Remove the USB containing the image before it finishes booting.
Setup as a VBS
-
After booting, an “Information available” box will appear, click <X Close>.
-
At the bottom of the screen on the program bar there will be a “[Software Updater]” bar, click on it to bring it up and click the “X” in the top right corner using the mouse. You have to use the mouse to do this and not keyboard shortcuts because it doesn’t retain the closing out any other way and could pop up later on during when the VBS actually runs.
-
From the Menu button at the bottom left corner open it and go to System Tools -> LXTerminal or use the keyboard shortcut (Ctrl+Alt+T).
-
In the LXTerminal window that pops up type: sudo sh extras/finish_install.sh. Hit Enter and it will prompt for the password, go ahead and type the password you set earlier “sparkhouse” and hit enter.
-
Then let the terminal do its thing scrolling the text till you get back to the default prompt of vbs@vbs-NUC:~$.
-
Run the following command to set the IP address and then reboot the device:
-
sudo setipaddress 172.19.104.xxx (Where xxx is a unique number between 1-250)
-
sudo setwriteprotect
-
sudo setTouchOff
-
sudo reboot
-
-
Right Click on the desktop and select “Desktop Preferences”. Go to the “Desktop Icons” tab and make sure all three options are de-selected, click <X Close>.
-
Go down to the menu in the bottom left again and go to Preferences -> Software and Updates. Then go to the Updates tab and deselect all updates, it will prompt you for the password. Then select the drop-down option under “Automatically Check for updates” and set it to “Never”. Then click <X Close>, You may get a pop-up box letting you know “The information about available software is out-of-date” just click the <X Close> button in the bottom corner.
-
Go down to the bottom left to the Menu button again then go to Preferences-> Power Manager and go to the “Display” Tab. Set the slider button at the top to “Off” and then move the slider on the “Blank after” setting all the way to the left until it reads “Never” and click <Close>.
You can Manually reboot here if for some reason it isn’t accepting the reboot command.
Plug the ethernet cable back in.
The VBS is done at this point and ready to ship out.
Available Scripts
After the install has been completed the keyboard and mouse inputs will likely be disabled and so all subsequent commands will need to be executed through an SSH connection from the game server PC.
All maintenance scripts reside in /usr/local/bin and hence can be executed without including the whole path. Other scripts in this directory are used by the system and are not used interactively by an engineer.
All commands operate in both protected mode and write enabled mode so must use ‘sudo’ in front of them and must be rebooted after to take affect.
The sequence would be:
-
sudo command <argument>
-
sudo reboot
You maybe be prompted for the password of “sparkhouse” in this process.
