How to troubleshoot DMX

This guide will walk you through the steps of troubleshooting your DMX lights.

Common Issues:

  • Common DMX issues often stem from incorrect addressing, faulty cables, or termination problems.
  • DMX Mosaic controller not being plugged into the network switch via ethernet line.
  • The phoenix cable wiring being unplugged or wired incorrect into the controller.
  • The DMX controller lost its project
  • The DMX controller SD card is bad
  • The DMX controller is faulty

If the controller is not powered on, or if any of these wires are unplugged then the DMX will not function.

1. Basic Checks:

  • Power:
    • Ensure all fixtures and the DMX controller are receiving power.
    • Check for tripped circuit breakers or blown fuses.
  • Connections:
    • Verify that all DMX cables are securely plugged into the correct ports.
    • Inspect cables for visible damage (cuts, frays, etc.).

2. Cable and Signal Issues:

  • Cable Type:
    • DMX requires specialized cables (120-ohm shielded twisted-pair). Using microphone cables can cause signal degradation.
    • Verify all DMX cables are securely plugged into the fixture
    • If possible test cables with a DMX cable tester.

3. Fixture-Specific Problems:

  • Fixture Settings:
    • Check the fixture's operating mode (DMX, standalone, etc.).
    • Verify that the fixture's DMX channel mode matches the controller's settings.
  • Fixture Functionality:
    • If a single fixture is malfunctioning, try controlling it independently to rule out a DMX signal issue.
    • If a fixture has a test mode, engage that mode to verify the fixture's internal functions.

(Delta Strike Clarification):

"Important Notes:

  • Never factory default the Mosaic controller
  • If the SD card is replaced please contact ETC or Delta Strike
  • Always disconnect power before working on DMX connections.
  • When in doubt, consult the user manuals for your DMX fixtures and controller.
  • When working with lighting, especially stage lighting, be aware of the possibility of high voltages, and high temperatures from the lighting fixtures themselves. If you are not qualified to work with electrical systems, contact a certified electrician."
